{"id":215,"date":"2020-11-27T05:28:34","date_gmt":"2020-11-27T05:28:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.jal.mybluehost.me\/\/?p=215"},"modified":"2021-02-01T10:25:57","modified_gmt":"2021-02-01T18:25:57","slug":"quit-this-communication-habit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rulenumbersix.ca\/about\/blog\/quit-this-communication-habit\/","title":{"rendered":"Quit this Communication Habit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><em>\u201cDoes that make sense?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This is a common turn of phrase and one I\u2019ve been working to eliminate from my communication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">While on the surface it can seem like a helpful tool when we\u2019re seeking to communicate clearly, ensure understanding, and get alignment, asking \u201cdoes that make sense?\u201d is problematic for a few reasons:<\/p>\n<ol data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It conveys doubt in your audience\u2019s ability to follow along and understand and can feel disempowering.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It introduces uncertainty about the credibility of the content you\u2019ve shared as the communicator.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It transfers the responsibility for putting in the work to communicate clearly away from you the communicator and places it onto your audience.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It\u2019s often not an effective way to validate your audience\u2019s understanding. Regardless of whether or not what you shared made sense to your audience, they might hesitate to say \u201cno it doesn\u2019t\u201d or \u201cnot really\u201d for fear or embarrassment of potentially coming across as dim, foolish, or incompetent. Those feelings are likely amplified if there are varying status roles involved in the conversation (e.g. CEO speaking to a junior team member) or a low level of trust in the relationship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Communicating clearly and ensuring clarity is important if not mission-critical, and it\u2019s something we need to take full responsibility for as leaders and communicators. The onus is on us to put in the work to communicate clearly and to develop self-awareness to effectively ensure understanding in different situations with different audiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Here are some alternatives to \u201cDoes that make sense?\u201d that I\u2019ve been using:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Do you have any questions?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">How does that sound to you?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">How do you see it?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">What else would you add, change, or clarify?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Of what I just shared, what are you curious to learn more about?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Of what I just shared, what resonates most with you?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">What other perspectives would you suggest?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">What insight are you taking away from this conversation?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I\u2019d love to know, what other alternatives do you use?
