It’s much easier to be a critic than a creator.
Instead of taking the posture of critic versus creator, be a critic who supports the creator by providing generous feedback.
Here’s some guidance to providing thoughtful and helpful feedback to creators:
- Ask if the creator is open to feedback and what kind.
- If they are, approach with humility and curiosity.
- Consider who and what the work is for.
- Be a supportive teammate, not a snarky opponent.
- Critique the work, not the creator.
- Be clear, specific, and kind.
- Notice and reflect your experience instead of making judgments based on your personal preference.
- Offer genuine applause and encouragement, not token praise as part of a sandwich technique.
P.S. I’m taking a digital break for the rest of the month as I unplug and spend time with family and friends. I’ll be back blogging in September. See you then!
